Top 10 apps in Apple's App Store

Top 10 apps in Apple's App Store

The App store continues to go from strength to strength and the number of apps just refuses to slow it's growth. There seems to be an App for that in every situation (almost), which is no mean feat and just goes to show how well Apple has the phone and music market firmly in it’s grasps.

Here's a top 10 for the apps you should download from the App Store (apps that run on all iOS devices):

My top 10 Apps

Facebook for iPhone (free)

Facebook is possibly the most popular social network around and having the iPhone app makes it even easier to keep in touch. I don't think there’s a feature from the website missing, so if you're a member of Facebook, you should have this on your iOS device. No excuses!

Twitter (free)

Twitter may not be as popular as Facebook, but it's popular product in it's own right. Twitter's official app is the evolution of a third party product that was bought in-house early/mid 2010. It's much improved and has some nice touches. Twitteriffic was my first choice before, but now that has had some real love and attention from the guys at Twitter, it's a must have app!

Angry Birds (~£0.59 - lite version available for free)

The most addictive game ever? Probably. 59p (99c) is nothing for the hours (days and weeks) of gameplay you'll get from this game. So simple, so easy to play, it's just genius!

Wikipanion+ (~$4.99 - lite version available for free)

Wikipedia in your pocket. The plus version is an improvement on the normal version, which you may like to play around with first. The appeal of Wikipanion+ is the ability to queue posts. By tapping on a link within an article, you can add it to your queue. The next time you have a connection, and using the app, the content will be downloaded for you to read. The app makes it easy to read, navigate and to explore more topics.

Sky+ (free)

The ability to search and remote record is all you need to know! If you have a Sky+ box and have registered as a customer on the Sky website, then you're ready to go. Record anything from anywhere!

Heritage (free)

The (first of many I hope) official app from Fotopedia, a photography based wiki that aims to illustrate Wikipedia articles with user contributed photos. The app takes the list of UNESCO Heritage sites around the world and provides information from Wikipedia alongside a gallery of images that Fotopedia has amassed since it's launch. As a contributor to the site, it's great to see the app make it to iOS and work so well.

iFooty Plus (£1.19 - lite version available for free)

This may not be the best football (soccer) app out there, but for the English Premier League, it serves it’s purpose well. The plus version allows you to set up push notifications for your favourite team(s) and provides the latest news and minute by minute text updates of every game (both supplied by the BBC).

Urbanspoon (free)

A food app for when you don't know where to eat! Choose a combiniation of location, price range and type to bring up a range of restaurants that match your criteria. Not exhaustive, but the ability to check out reviews, menus and locations is very useful.

IMDb (free)

I love movies and it's sometimes nice to know what films actors have been in. IMDb is the app you need to discover actors, new movies and more!

Remote (free)

An app by Apple that provides the ability to remote control other Apple devices. I've only ever used it to control my iTunes library on my MacBook, but it's pretty much flawless. The latest update brings Apple TV compatibility. It works over wifi, not Bluetooth, but that's probably a good move so that it saves battery life.

Honourable mentions

Some apps didn’t quite make it into my top 10, but are worth a mention anyway:

Imagine Poker (game), Scramble 2 (game), Tap Tap (series of games), Flight Control (game), Enigmo (game), Bubble Trouble (game), PS Express (photography), Flickr (photography) and TaskPaper (productivity).

If I've missed any apps, please comment below and I'll consider them for a most recommended version of the list. If you have an Android device, check out my top 5 Android apps.
